Jets Fortify Backfield With Israel Abanikanda
Published: Apr 29, 2023 at 06:59 PM
The New York Jets selected Pittsburgh running back Israel Abanikanda with the 143rd overall pick in the NFL Draft. He didn't play much during his freshman year, but the runner rose to prominence in 2021, recording 651 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Abanikanda completely broke out in 2022 by amassing 1431 rushing yards and 21 scores at Pittsburgh. The 20-year-old has dynamic potential, but his small hands could lead to costly drops. Abanikanda garners attention, anyway, towards the end of fantasy drafts as a sleeper in hopes he carves out a role with New York. His fantasy stock may rise early in the year depending on the availability of Breece Hall (knee). Abanikanda's explosiveness could reasonably see him supplant Zonovan Knight and Michael Carter for backfield touches on the Jets at some point.
