Darnell Wright Signs Rookie Deal, Boosting Justin Fields' Protection
Published: May 16, 2023 at 06:31 AM
The Chicago Bears signed their first-round draft pick offensive tackle Darnell Wright to his rookie deal on Monday. The Tennessee Volunteers product, who is 6'6" and 335 pounds, allowed no sacks and just six hurries while taking 507 pass protection snaps his senior year in Knoxville. The Bears are hoping his prowess will result in better protection for Justin Fields, who was one of the most-sacked quarterbacks in the league. Last season, the Bears allowed 58 sacks, the fourth-most. Chicago did rank No. 16 in pass blocking, according to PFF. Some of the sacks Fields took were the result of him holding onto the ball too long. Still, Wright is an upgrade at right tackle, and he should improve the fantasy outlooks of Chicago's offensive weapons.
