Chiefs Decline Fifth-Year Option On Clyde Edwards-Helaire

Published: May 02, 2023 at 06:37 PM
As expected, the Kansas City Chiefs declined running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire's fifth-year option this week, according to a league source. Edwards-Helaire has been a bust since being taken in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. CEH would have had a salary of roughly $5.46 million for 2024 if the option had been picked up. He's now heading into a contract year and is slated to count $3.44 million toward this year's salary cap with a base salary of $1.986 million. The 24-year-old was limited to 10 games in 2022 due to injury, and rookie Isiah Pacheco eventually took over as KC's lead back. Edwards-Helaire ran for just 302 yards and three touchdowns while catching 17 passes for 151 yards. The re-signing of pass-catching back Jerick McKinnon is more bad news for Edwards-Helaire in 2023.
